Most people pick a keyboard by its lighting and looks, then a week later realise it does not suit them: the keys feel heavy, the noise annoys whoever sits nearby, or the press does not register at the right moment in a game. This guide decodes the colours and the jargon so you can choose deliberately instead of by trial and regret.
How a mechanical switch actually works
In a cheap membrane keyboard a single rubber sheet sits under all the keys, so the feel is mushy, uniform and wears out fast. In a mechanical keyboard every key has its own mechanism: a plastic housing, a moving stem and a spring that pushes the key back up. That independence is why mechanical boards are more precise, last longer, and feel identical from the first key to the last.
Three terms matter before you buy: total travel, which is 4.0 mm on classic Cherry MX switches; the actuation point, the depth at which the letter is actually registered — around 2.0 mm, halfway down, so you never need to bottom the key out; and actuation force, measured in centinewtons (cN), which is practically the same as gram-force.
The three classic types
Linear: travels smoothly top to bottom with no bump and no click. The famous example is Cherry MX Red at roughly 45 cN with a 2.0 mm actuation point out of 4.0 mm of total travel. This is the gaming favourite because repeated presses are faster and lighter on the finger.
Tactile: the same idea, but you feel a small bump at the moment of actuation without a loud click. Cherry MX Brown is the classic example at roughly 55 cN with a 2.0 mm actuation point. An excellent choice if you type a lot and want to feel that the letter landed.
Clicky: gives you both a bump and an audible click. Cherry MX Blue sits at roughly 60 cN with a 2.2 mm actuation point. It is a joy to type on, but it is loud and wrong for a shared office or a room where someone is sleeping.

The keyboard knows how deep the key is at every instant, not just whether it is pressed.
Two important things follow. First, an adjustable actuation point set in software, per key — shallow for gaming, deeper for typing so you do not get stray characters. Second, Rapid Trigger, which resets the key the instant you start lifting your finger instead of waiting for a fixed reset point; a tiny upward movement is enough for you to press again straight away. And because there is no metal-to-metal contact, the switch lasts far longer.

Define your use first: competitive gaming goes to a light linear or a magnetic switch with Rapid Trigger; long typing sessions go to tactile; if you love the sound and work alone, go clicky; and if you are unsure, take a hot-swap board and experiment at your own pace. Then pick the size by your desk and your need for a number pad, then the connection type. Everything else — keycaps, lighting, colour — comes last, because none of it affects your daily comfort the way the switch does.
