How to choose a motherboardDecide on your CPU first, then build the choice around it using these criteria:
- Socket comes first: Intel 12th, 13th and 14th Gen use LGA1700, while the newer Core Ultra uses LGA1851. Modern AMD Ryzen sits on AM5. These sockets are not interchangeable at all.
- Chipset: codes like B760, Z790, B650 and X870 define the features. Z and X boards support CPU overclocking, while cheaper B boards are enough for most users.
- Memory type: make sure the board is DDR5 if you want the latest RAM, since some older boards are still DDR4 and the two cannot be mixed.
- Ports and expansion: check the number of M.2 slots for NVMe drives, USB ports, a PCIe 5.0 slot for the GPU, and built-in WiFi.
- Form factor: ATX for big cases and more expansion, Micro-ATX for compact, budget-friendly builds.
- Power delivery (VRM): strong CPUs need a solid VRM with heatsinks to stay stable under load.

For an office build or light gaming on an Intel i5, a Micro-ATX B760 board with DDR5 is an affordable, balanced choice.
High performance and gaming (Intel)
With a Core i7 or i9 and a strong GPU like the RTX 5060 or higher, choose a Z790 or Z890 board for stronger power delivery, extra M.2 slots and built-in WiFi.
For the modern AMD Ryzen platform
If you go with a Ryzen CPU on AM5, X870 boards bring USB4, WiFi 7 and PCIe 5.0 for longer-term future proofing.
- Update the BIOS if the board is older than your CPU so it recognises the chip.
- Don't pay for a pricey Z board if you won't overclock.
