If you have been postponing a gaming machine purchase for a year or more, the global market is not waiting for you this time. The memory crisis that started inside AI datacenters has reached the ordinary gamer's wallet, and the old rule of thumb — "build a PC yourself and you will save money" — needs a serious review before you spend anything.

So the recurring question has become very concrete: is a ready-made gaming laptop the better move, or a desktop you assemble part by part? In 2026 the answer is not the same one we would have given two years ago, and here is why.

What is actually happening in the market

The three companies that make almost all of the world's DRAM — Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — have shifted a large share of their fab capacity away from consumer memory toward HBM for AI accelerators, simply because HBM earns them several times more per wafer. The result: DRAM prices climbed roughly 170% during 2025, and Gartner expects another wave of around 130% with the crunch stretching into 2027.

Graphics cards were hit even harder, because memory chips account for more than 80% of the cost of building a GPU. Nvidia cut RTX 50-series production by about 20%, with steeper cuts on certain models, and in July 2026 GDDR7 officially joined the shortage. The upshot: the desktop RTX 5090's median US street price reached $4,699 against a $1,999 launch MSRP — more than double. Selling RTX 50 cards at their official price during QuakeCon 2026 was itself treated as news.

MSI told investors its gaming hardware prices would rise between 15% and 30% across 2026, and IDC expects PC prices to climb by up to 8% in the same year. Some manufacturers have even started shipping prebuilt desktops with no RAM at all, leaving the buyer to source it.

What this means for you in practice

The equation has partly flipped. Building a PC today means buying the GPU, the RAM and the SSD each at today's spot price — and those are precisely the three components the crisis hit hardest. A gaming laptop, by contrast, is a sealed bundle: GPU, memory and storage all arrive under one price the manufacturer built on earlier supply contracts. Buying a laptop today effectively means buying memory at an older price than the one on the shelf.

But do not be fooled by the naming, and this point matters a lot. The RTX 5090 inside a laptop is not the desktop RTX 5090: it uses the same GB203 silicon found in the desktop 5080, runs at around 175W versus 575W for the desktop card, and ends up roughly 50% to 55% slower. The simple rule is to compare laptops only against other laptops, never a laptop GPU name against a desktop one.

And the most durable point of all: buy more RAM and storage than you need today. The CPU and GPU are soldered and cannot be replaced; RAM and the SSD can, but you will pay whatever the market asks at that moment — and every indicator points upward, since Micron's own new capacity will not ship meaningful volume before the third quarter of 2028. Put plainly: 32GB today is cheaper than 16GB today plus another 16GB a year from now.

The right pick for each kind of buyer

It suits the buyer whose priority is the GPU and who is willing to add memory early and pay its price, or who already owns a Windows license.

The real sweet spot for most gamers, though, is here: an RTX 5070 Ti with 12GB, 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage and a 240Hz OLED screen. It runs today's games at high settings without paying the tax that comes with the bigger name.

Finally, the cheapest way into the RTX 5080 tier on this list: an Ultra 7-255HX with 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and a 16-inch QHD+ 240Hz screen, with no OS included. A good fit if the GPU is your priority — provided you plan to add memory early.

The bottom line, and advice that will still hold

I cannot tell you to "wait for prices to fall," because every available indicator says waiting in this market costs you rather than saves you: meaningful new production capacity will not come online before the third quarter of 2028, and some analyses put a full recovery no earlier than 2030.

At the same time, I am not telling you to rush into anything. The rule that will still be true long after the crisis calms down is this: in a gaming laptop, RAM, storage and video memory are the only parts you will never regret over-buying, and the name printed on the GPU is not a performance measurement. Pick a machine that carries you for three years from day one, and do not build your budget around a future upgrade whose price nobody can predict.
