Anyone watching hardware prices this year has noticed the same thing: they go up and never come back down. The global memory crunch — caused by AI data centres absorbing most DRAM chip output — pushed RAM and SSD prices sharply higher through 2026, and IDC expects computer prices to rise by up to 8% this year. In a climate like that, any project that lets you make instead of buy is worth double. That is exactly where 3D printing comes in.
The idea is simple: with one machine and one spool of filament you can produce a sellable part within hours, with no moulds, no factory and no minimum order. The real question is not whether the business works, but how to enter it properly so you do not burn your capital in the first two months.
What is happening in the 3D printing market right now
The market is going through its strongest growth wave in years. Entry-level printer shipments rose 26% across 2025, with the increase reaching 47% in the final quarter compared to the year before. FDM — filament-based printing — remains the most widespread technology with a 36.7% share of the 3D printing market in 2026, and the FDM printer market was valued at 3.07 billion dollars this year, with an expected compound annual growth rate of around 21.8% through 2035.
The filament market itself was valued at roughly 1.28 billion dollars in 2026 and is growing at close to 19.75% a year, which means the raw material has steady, rising global demand rather than a fad that fizzles out in a year.
On the brand side, Bambu Lab pulled the rug out from under Creality and became the world number one in budget printer sales with a 37% share of the sub-2,500-dollar segment. In the first four months of 2026, nearly every second printer sold was a Bambu Lab, against one in four for Creality. That number matters more to a business owner than to a hobbyist: the wider an ecosystem spreads, the easier and cheaper it becomes to find ready-made files, tuned settings and supplies.
What this means for you in practice
The economics are clear and need no complication. Material cost for a small part runs globally between half a dollar and three dollars, while custom pieces sell for 12 to 50 dollars and up. Reported margins in the popular categories are: accessories and jewellery 70–85%, articulated toys 65–80%, tabletop gaming miniatures 60–75%, home decor 60–75%, and cosplay props 55–70%.
But note one essential point: those margins apply to customised items with high perceived value, not to copies of cheap parts already sold in every shop. The most successful local ideas are the ones you cannot buy off the shelf: a discontinued spare part, a mount designed for one specific device, a gift with a name on it, an architectural model, or a broken plastic piece inside an expensive appliance. That last one has become even more valuable now that hardware prices are up, because people prefer repairing over replacing.
And one simple management habit separates a profitable shop from a busy one that earns nothing: calculate your cost by weight. A filament spool weighs one kilogram, and most small parts consume between 20 and 60 grams, so a single kilo gives you dozens of pieces. Take each part weight from your slicer before you price it, add electricity, time and a realistic scrap rate for failed prints, and you will know your actual profit instead of guessing at it.
A filament for every goal — the shortlist
Always start with PLA. It is the easiest material there is, prints between 180 and 220 degrees Celsius, needs no enclosure and gives off no strong odour, so you can run the printer inside the house. Black in particular is a smart starting choice because it hides layer flaws and suits the mounts and functional parts that sell in volume.
Grey does the exact opposite of black: it shows detail and edges clearly under light, which makes it the best pick for prototypes and customer samples before you agree on a final production run, and for parts whose accuracy you want to verify before repeating them dozens of times.
When you move from testing to selling, appearance changes everything. Silk filament in gold gives a part a near-metallic sheen that raises its perceived value in the customer eye at no extra cost to you — and that is precisely the secret behind the high margins in gifts and accessories.
The same logic applies to glittering colours. Sparkling crimson red works beautifully for occasion products, gifts and seasonal pieces, a category that sells at a higher price because the buyer is buying the look before the function.
The third line worth trying is wood-look filament. Parts come out with a texture and colour close to natural wood, which opens the door to home decor, heritage-style pieces and desk gifts — a market that pays far more than plain plastic ever will.
And if you want to test the wood line in larger quantity before committing to a pricier material, an economical option in the same family lets you try several designs and gauge customer reaction before you scale up.
If your work leans toward functional parts — mounts, workshop tools, spares that take load — carbon-reinforced PLA is a strong choice: it prints around 200 to 230 degrees, and its low thermal expansion reduces warping and gives better dimensional accuracy. Just remember its one condition: carbon fibres wear out a brass nozzle, so a hardened steel nozzle is required.
For parts that will see real heat — inside a car during an Iraqi summer, or next to a device that runs warm — ABS is the answer, because it is tougher and far more heat-tolerant than PLA. In exchange it demands harder conditions: a nozzle at 220 to 250 degrees, a heated bed, an enclosed printer and good room ventilation.
