Most of the devices that die in Iraq this summer do not die of old age. They die because the power goes off and comes back ten times a day. A PC shuts down mid-task, the router reboots in the middle of a meeting, and the cameras lose the recording at exactly the minute you needed it. What is happening to power and prices at the same time

The numbers are blunt. Iraq's highest recorded output in early 2026 was around 29,000 megawatts, against a summer peak demand estimated between 40,000 and 55,000 megawatts depending on the source. The result is scheduled load shedding and a wide gap between provinces: in mid-July 2026 national supply in Baghdad averaged 8 to 10 hours a day, some provinces got no more than six, while Basra reached close to 20.

The Gulf electrical interconnection that was counted on has slipped to at least the end of August 2026. In practice that means leaning on the neighbourhood generator and switching back and forth with the grid is now a daily routine, and every switch is an interruption plus a voltage jump aimed straight at your equipment.

At the same time the global device market is in its worst memory crunch in years. RAM prices jumped by as much as 89% during 2026, and DRAM alone rose around 90% in the first quarter compared with the last quarter of 2025, because AI data centres are absorbing an estimated 70% of high end memory. IDC expects average PC prices to rise by up to 8% this year, while some manufacturers have warned of increases reaching 20%, and a few have started shipping prebuilt machines with no RAM at all. Graphics cards were not spared either: memory chips make up more than 80% of the cost of building a card, and the RTX 5090 has passed 4,600 dollars on the US market. Intel has signalled that conditions may not normalise before 2028.

The simple conclusion: the machine on your desk today is worth more than what you paid for it. Protecting it is an investment, not a luxury.

What this means for you in practice
