Every new NVMe spec sheet shows a bigger number than the last one: 7,000 MB/s, then 13,600, and then the news arrives that PCIe Gen 6 is finalized on paper. But the question that matters to your wallet when you buy a drive is not how big the number is. The real question is whether you will feel that number in your daily work, or whether you are paying extra for something you will never notice. And that question carries more weight than ever, because the price of storage itself changed dramatically during 2026.
What is happening in the storage market right now
Memory is the big story this year. AI data centers pulled manufacturing capacity toward themselves, and the result has been record increases in DRAM and NAND contract prices. According to TrendForce, NAND Flash contract prices rose 70 to 75 percent in the second quarter of 2026 alone, after even larger jumps in the first quarter, and the third quarter forecast points to a further 10 to 15 percent rise. The reason is no mystery. AI servers swallow storage in amounts that are hard to picture: published estimates suggest a single high-end AI processor needs roughly 16TB of NAND to run efficiently, and a full server rack can demand somewhere around 1,152TB. The same story applies to RAM and graphics cards, to the point that memory chips now account for more than 80 percent of the manufacturing cost of a graphics card, and IDC expects computer prices to rise by up to 8 percent through 2026. Most analyses point to 2027 as the earliest window for real relief, once new fab capacity comes online.
Where Gen 5 and Gen 6 actually fit
Let us be blunt about Gen 6 first. The specification is finalized and there are early demonstrations in the server world, but you will not see it in personal computers any time soon. As of today no consumer CPU, motherboard or graphics card supports PCIe 6.0, and nobody expects consumer support before 2027. The controllers are still at the sampling stage: Marvell will begin sampling its controller in the last quarter of 2026, and the first drives built on it are expected in late 2027 and more likely 2028. As for Gen 6 genuinely reaching home PCs, published estimates talk about 2030. The takeaway is simple: do not postpone a purchase today while waiting for Gen 6.
Gen 5, on the other hand, exists and you can buy it now, with paper speeds close to double Gen 4. The catch is that the gap does not carry over to daily use at anything like the same ratio. Published testing shows game load time differences between Gen 4 and Gen 5 of roughly 1 to 3 seconds, and in most titles it drops to fractions of a second. Even in games that stream assets straight to the GPU, the benefit only shows up with very large texture packs. In exchange, Gen 5 drives draw more power, run hotter, and need a real heatsink, sometimes active cooling.
What this means for you in practice
- Your usage picks the generation, not the other way round. Games, Windows and office work? Gen 4 is more than enough. 4K and 8K editing, moving huge files every day, or working with large data sets? That is where Gen 5 shows up.
- Capacity matters more than speed for most people. You will feel the difference between a 1TB and a 2TB drive every week; you will rarely feel the difference between 7,000 and 13,600 MB/s.
- Check your slot before buying. A Gen 5 drive works in a Gen 4 motherboard, but only at Gen 4 speed. You paid a premium you never used.
- Heat is part of the equation. If you pick a high performance drive, plan the cooling from the start, not after it begins throttling.
- Waiting is not a strategy. In a rising market, holding out for prices to drop usually costs you more.
