The DRAM crunch that started with AI data centers' appetite did not stop at RAM — it reached NAND, the flash chips inside every SSD you buy. What is happening in the storage market this year

- Western Digital and Seagate have said their entire 2026 output is essentially sold out to data center customers, with supply agreements stretching into 2027 and 2028.
This is not a one-week squeeze. The prevailing outlook is that real relief will not arrive before 2027–2028, when new fabs come online. Which means the storage decision you make today will live with you for a year or two at least, so it is worth thinking through properly.
What this means for you in practice
First thing to understand: prices did not rise evenly across capacities. Small capacities took the steepest percentage increases, because fabs now concentrate on higher-density chips suited to data centers, making small drives uneconomical to produce.
